What is a creative writing workshop

My confidence in being a writer had never been lower than at that moment. But the workshop went on and so did my writing. After those first few days of humiliation and embarrassment, which had been incredibly self-inflicted, we had finally moved onto the next topic: poetry.

This was my moment to shine. We were given more prompts and these had felt more…me. I had already written poetry before, but it was something I enjoyed, maybe even excelled at! I think even my teacher and classmates could agree on that.

Now when my teacher told us we would be sharing our work, I was no longer afraid. I also, little by little, had learned to let go of the fear I had in the back of my mind whenever I was about to share my work with others. Writing is a vulnerable activity, so it can be scary to show your writing to others, be it a friend or stranger. But by taking a creative writing workshop, I became more comfortable with the idea of reading my work to others and being more proud and less scared.

During this two-week workshop, our class was introduced to numerous published writers who specialized in many different genres: poetry, spoken word, autobiography, and memoirs. One of our guest speakers had even specialized in zines, which introduced me to a whole new world of literary fineness, and the process of self-publishing. One important thing I learned from each writer, was that each of them had to go on their own journey to get to where they are today.

One writer had worked for years before he got published, while another one had already received recognition for his work at the early age of fourteen. It is more about the impact and connection one makes with their reader and less about how many publications you have had work published in.

By having others comment on my work and what could be improved upon, I learned how to be less defensive regarding criticism surrounding my writing. If anything they are giving you edits to make because they believe your piece has potential and they want it to work. I remember when I had a few of my pieces were being workshopped.

Being workshopped, for those who may be unfamiliar, is when a writer shares their piece with others. Any typos, confusions, sentences that could be removed, descriptions that could be further built upon, that can be found in the piece. Workshops are best for pieces you know need to be revised, but are not sure how to go about starting those revisions. I knew one piece, in particular, that I had brought to the workshop needed a bit revision, but I was surprised when I heard criticism regarding some of the pieces that I thought were perfect, unflawed.

To give an example of one instance, someone had not liked the way one of my poems had ended. She thought the ending was unclear, a bit confusing even, and suggested I end on a stronger note. I was over the moon to hear her say that because that specific piece was one I was incredibly proud of and had poured my blood, sweat, and tears into. It just goes to show that at the end of the day, everyone is going to have different opinions. I learned too many lessons to name from enrolling in a creative writing workshop, but here are a few that I deemed as being the most important.

It made me further realize how much of a passion I have for writing. Despite how silly it may sound, writing helps me make sense of the world around me. Writing keeps me sane in a way. I highly urge any writer to participate in a writing workshop. Being around other writers is a rewarding experience, you have the luxury of sharing a common ground with these people, but they can also help you improve your craft. That is the only way you will truly improve your craft as a writer.
